Future GRADS MentorSHPE Program

The Future GRADS MentorSHPE Program facilitates one-to-one mentoring relationships that connect graduate school applicants with mentors to guide them through the application process. Mentees will receive guidance on the application process from those who have experienced the process themselves.

Meetings and tasks are designed to help mentees navigate the graduate school application process. Mentors will give guidance on tasks such as GRE preparation, securing solid recommendations, completing your CV and personal statement, evaluating programs you plan to apply to, networking opportunities to learn more about graduate programs, and more!

FAQs

For this program we will match you with a mentor. We will review your application and the applications of the mentor to find you a match that as closely as possible aligns with your future goals.

Mentees are expected to attend the kickoff training on Sept 11th at 7pm EST and engage with their mentor through 11/17/23. Most of this interaction will take place via email and other web-related tools (for example, instant messaging) or face-to-face, as appropriate. Mentors will work with their mentee on reviewing application documents, answering questions on the application process and meeting with the mentee to discuss their progress.

Mentees can also choose to remain involved in the spring semester with mock interviews. More information about that activity will be shared near the end of the fall semester.

For this program, the mentor relationship is scheduled to take place Sept 11-Nov 17, 2023.

We encourage letting the mentor know about the situation and contacting a program administrator as soon as possible. We will provide our full support to resolve the situation in a positive and satisfactory manner.

Become an FGM Mentor

We invite anyone who has successfully gone through the graduate school application process themselves to serve as a mentor. Assistant, associate, and full professors, as well as teaching professors, adjuncts, professionals or current graduate students are all invited to apply!

Mentors are matched one-on-one with a mentee. SHPE will offer ongoing support and development for mentors with an orientation introducing the FGM model, best mentoring practices, and more.

We anticipate a time commitment of 10-15 hours over a period over the fall semester.

  • One hour orientation meeting
  • One hour kick off meeting
  • At least 7 one-hour meetings with mentee
  • One hour debrief at the end of the program

There is a $500 honorarium for mentors.
